Past continuous tense

 

Form

             Was/were + verb –ing form

 

.We use the this structure to talk about sth which was already happening at a time in the past and was not finished at that time

:For example

 

Question: ?what were you doing at three o’clock yesterday

.I was playing Volleyball

Lesson 3

Past simple tense

 

.We use the past simple to talk about actions and situations in the past

.I went to the cinema yesterday

.Bill lived in Athens from 1965 to 1968

.We didn’t go out last night

?Did you watch the film on TV

 

:We form the past simple of regular verbs with an  ed  ending

Stay è stayed

Live è lived

 

:Irregular verbs have different past forms

Go è went

See è saw

 

:We form the negative with  did not (didn’t)  and the interrogative with did

 

?I stayed   è I didn’t stay è did I stay

?He went  è he didn’t go è did he go

Present continuous tense

 

:Form

 

(Be + verb –ing form (present participle

 

.We use the present continuous to talk about something that is happening at the moment of speaking

 

.Be quiet! I’m trying to study

.Where is Ali? He is having a bath

?Are you working at the moment

.It is raining

 

.We also use it to talk about something that is happening for a limited period of time around the present

 

.I’m trying to find a job at the moment

.You are spending lots of money these days

.She is staying in hospital all this weekend

Lesson 1

Present simple tense

 

 Form

 

Affirmative

 

I / you / we / they work.

He / she / it works.

 

Negative

I / you / we / they do not (don’t) work.

He / she / it does not (doesn’t) work.

 

Interrogative

?Do I / you / we / they work

?Does he / she / it work

 

 We use the present simple to talk about something which happens repeatedly or all the time or at any time. Look at these examples

 

.Most evening I stay at home and watch TV

.My brother works every Saturday

.I don’t live in London. I live in Paris

?What do they usually do at weekends

.Water freezes in a very cold place

 

:Verbs in the 3rd person singular have an  -(e)s  ending. Look at these examples

I work  à he works

They go à it goes
